Reconstruction Of Delaware Avenue between South Chapel Street and Library Avenue

Project Description:
Provide for safe and efficient two-way bicycle traffic along Delaware Avenue from South Main Street to Library Avenue. Reconstruction of Delaware Avenue between South Chapel Street and Library Avenue.

Project Justification:
A cycle track concept along Delaware Avenue was recommended as part of the Newark Bike Plan. is being considered because there is not a good alternative for cyclists to travel west through Newark. The current alternatives would involve using Main Street or East Cleveland Avenue. Both of these westbound routes lack bicycle facilities. Therefore, many cyclists utilize the sidewalks along Delaware Avenue to travel westbound through Newark.

Current Phase:
Design and Planning

Project Timeline:
Construction Start Date: Spring 2021

Construction End Date: Summer 2022

Project Update:
Final design is underway. This project will be done in conjunction with upcoming paving projects in Newark, but will not conflict with the Main Street reconstruction project. We are continuing to meet with the University of Delaware to further discuss the project and coordinate right of way needs.
