Claymont – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 2:57 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2019, on northbound Philadelphia Pike in the area of Princeton Avenue in Claymont.

The initial investigation has determined that a 47-year-old Claymont man, was a pedestrian who was walking northbound on the sidewalk in front of the Burger King, located at 2911 Philadelphia Pike.

The sidewalk is located to the west of the southbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike. A 2014 Chrysler 200, operated by an 18-year-old man, also from Claymont, was traveling northbound on Philadelphia Pike in the area of Princeton Avenue. For an undetermined reason, the Chrysler drifted to the left and traveled across the southbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike and then continued onto the sidewalk at which time it struck the pedestrian, according to Troopers. After being struck the pedestrian was thrown into a retaining wall located on the Burger King property, where he came to rest.

The Chrysler continued in a northerly direction traveling up an embankment which caused it to overturn. The Chrysler remained in motion, striking a utility pole and a second embankment at which time it went airborne before coming to rest on its left side in the parking lot of a business located at 2999 Philadelphia Pike.

The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chrysler was not injured. Speed is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash, State Police said.

The investigation is ongoing and any one with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Cpl. J. Forester of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-365-8485.
