Man Dies After Crashing Into Tree Thursday Night

Milton- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on October 3, 2019, at approximately 11:05 p.m., when a 2000 Toyota Avalon was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1), north of Hudson Road (CR 258), approaching Lockerman Road (Side Access Road). For unknown reasons, the operator failed to maintain its lane and exited the east edge of Coastal Highway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle continued traveling in a northerly direction along the grass shoulder of Coastal Highway where it eventually crossed over Lockerman Road and struck a standing tree.

The operator and sole occupant, a 64-year-old Milton man was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

Northbound Coastal Highway in the area of Lockerman Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
