Troopers: Newark Man Being Investigated In Saturday’s Fatal Crash

Milton – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 2:51 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020, on Coastal Hwy., in the area of Eagles Crest Road in Milton, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the investigation has determined that a 2020 Toyota RAV 4, operated by a 75-year-old Frederica man, was traveling in the right lane of southbound Coastal Hwy., north of Eagles Crest Road. A 2015 Audi A3, operated by a 31-year-old Newark man, was also traveling southbound on Coastal Hwy. in the right lane, following directly behind the Toyota.

For an undetermined reason, the Audi failed to slow down as it approached the Toyota and struck it from behind. As a result of the impact, the Toyota was forced off the west side of the roadway, where it overturned before coming to rest in a grassy area. The Audi also traveled off the west side of the roadway striking and proceeding through a chain-link fence, before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Toyota, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 69-year-old female passenger in his vehicle was transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries. The identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin, said Austin.

The driver of the Audi was also transported to Beebe Hospital with serious injuries. Austin said impairment is being deemed as a contributing factor in the crash on his behalf.

Southbound Coastal Hwy. was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
