Troopers Update Crash That Closed I-95 Friday Morning

Newark – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 4:42 a.m., this morning, Friday, March 20, 2020 on I-95 northbound in the area of Churchman’s marsh.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer, operated by a 34-year-old Port Republic, NJ.man, was traveling in the center-right lane of northbound I-95, slowing down due to stopped traffic further north. A 2006 Mazda 3, operated by a 20-year-old Wilmington man, was also traveling northbound I-95 when he failed to stop and struck the rear of the tractor-trailer, officials said. After the impact, both vehicles came to a rest in the roadway.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, who was properly restrained was not injured.

The driver of the Mazda, who was also properly restrained, was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. He was cited for Failure to Remain in a Single Lane and Expired Registration.

I-95 northbound was closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
