Woman Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle On Route 13

New Castle – The Delaware State Police is investigating a serious crash involving a bicyclist that occurred at approximately 8:01 p.m., Sunday, March 29, 2020, on Rt. 13 in the area of Hares Corner.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2001 GMC Denali, operated by a 36-year-old Delaware City man, was traveling northbound in the center lane of Rt. 13, south of the intersection with Rt. 273. A 51-year-old New Castle woman, who was riding a bicycle, attempted to cross the northbound lanes of Rt. 13 from east to west and rode directly into the path of the Denali, according to police. The operator of the Denali swerved in an attempt to avoid the bicyclist but was unsuccessful, with the front right of his vehicle striking her. The Denali came to a controlled stop in a nearby parking lot and remained on scene.

The bicyclist was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Denali and a juvenile passenger were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Trooper Leonardi at Troop 2 by calling 302-834-2620.
