Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Truck

Selbyville – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a bicyclist that occurred at approximately 1:52 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2020, at the intersection of Lighthouse Road and Salty Way Drive, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said the initial investigation has determined a 1997 Nissan pickup truck, operated by a 30-year-old Frankford man, was traveling eastbound on Lighthouse Road, approaching Salty Way. A 69-year-old Selbyville woman, who was riding a bicycle, traveling eastbound on Lighthouse Road, within the designated westbound bicycle lane, for unknown reasons crossed over Lighthouse Road directly into the path of the Nissan pickup truck. The operator of the pickup truck was unable to avoid the collision, and the left front of the vehicle collided with the right side of the bicycle within the eastbound lane of Lighthouse Road. After the impact, the operator of the Nissan pickup truck came to a controlled stop and within the eastbound travel lane.

The bicyclist was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Nissan pickup truck was not injured.

The eastbound travel lane of Lighthouse Road was closed for approximately 3.0 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
