Troopers Identify Woman Killed Route 9 Crash In New Castle

Delaware City– The Delaware State Police have identified the driver who died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash on River Road. (Rt. 9) at Hamburg Road., on June 16, 2020, as 85-year-old Margaret Lacy of New Castle.

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving two vehicles that occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m., on June 16, 2020, on River Road (RT 9) at Hamburg Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said a 2020 Jeep Compass operated by an 85-year-old female from New Castle, was traveling eastbound on Hamburg Road, approaching River Road (Rt. 9). A 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 operated by a 42-year-old female from Delaware City was traveling southbound on Rt. 9, approaching Hamburg Road.

The Jeep Compass had stopped at the posted stop sign but then attempted to turn left towards northbound Route 9 entering into the path of the Dodge Ram resulting in the front center of the Dodge Ram striking the left front side of the Jeep Compass. As a result of the collision, the Jeep Compass spun in a clockwise direction, coming to rest south of the initial impact. The Dodge Ram was redirected after the collision and traveled off the east edge of the roadway, coming to rest on the east side of the road.

Both operators were properly restrained and transported to a nearby hospital after the collision. The operator of the Jeep sustained injuries she was unable to recover from and died on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. The operator of the Dodge was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

As a result of the crash, Route 9 at Hamburg Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

 

Breaking Report

New Castle – Rescue crews from the Goodwill, Delaware City, and Wilmington manor Fire Companies along with New castle Country Medics and Trooper 4 have responded to Hamburg Road at River Road for a vehicle accident with injuries.

Responding crews learned that at least one person was seriously injured and a vehicle was on fire.

Upon arrival, crews reported two vehicles involved with two patients trapped, one in each vehicle.

At around 5:20, Command reported both patients have been extricated and are in the care of EMT’s and Medics. Trooper 4 has been recalled.

River Road (Route 9) is closed between Hamburg Lane and Federal School Road.

Avoid the area.
