Newark Man Struck And Killed On Route 4 Late Tuesday

Newark– The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said the incident occurred on July 15, 2020, at approximately 10:59 p.m., when a 2015 Hyundai Sonata was traveling westbound on Chestnut Hill Road (DE 4) in the left lane passing Brennen Drive and approaching Old Newark Road. The pedestrian was attempting to cross Chestnut Hill Road, east of Old Newark Road, from the north side of the roadway. The pedestrian entered the roadway directly into the path of the Sonata. The vehicle attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the right but was unable to avoid striking with the pedestrian. The pedestrian was not crossing at a marked crosswalk, said Pepper. One was located east of the collision scene, added Pepper.

The operator of the Sonata, a 31-year-old male from Newark remained on scene. He was properly restrained and not injured.

The pedestrian, a 43-year-old Newark man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

Chestnut Hill Road was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit.
