Police: Man In Critical Condition After Being Assaulted With A Hammer, One In Custody

The Dover Police Department arrested a 39-year-old male after he assaulted a 57-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon, according to Sergeant Mark Hoffman, Public Information Officer.

Hoffman said at approximately 5:43PM, officers were called to the 100 Block of S. State Street for a report of a male bleeding from the head with a black male standing over him with a hammer. When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim with a severe head injury. Officers also located the suspect, Jerrin Rountree standing nearby and took him into custody without incident. Officers also located the hammer that was used in the assault, said Hoffman. It was later learned that the assault occurred as a result of a verbal argument between the two men.

The victim was transported to Kent General Hospital where he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Rountree was committed to SCI on a $20,000 secured bond on the following charges:
-Assault 1st Degree
-Possession of a Deadly Weapon During Commission of Felony
