Police Update Accident Involving 9-Year-Old In Newark

On Saturday evening, July 11, 2020, at about 9:00, Newark Police were dispatched to East Cleveland Avenue, east of Winner Boulevard, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car. Arriving officers found a 9-year-old female child that had been struck by a Jeep Patriot in the westbound lanes of East Cleveland Avenue.

The child, who was conscious, was treated at the scene by the Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Company of Newark and New Castle County EMS. The child was transported and admitted to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation at the scene found that the child crossed from the south to the north side of East Cleveland Avenue while not in a marked crosswalk, police said Monday. The child, who was with a parent, was walking with their two dogs at the time of the crash.

The striking vehicle remained at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not charged with any offense.
