Troopers Update Wednesday’s Fatal Crash Near Port Penn

Middletown– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:09 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2020, on Saint Augustine Beach Road south of 6th Street, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said the initial investigation has determined a 2009 Toyota Camry, driven by a 59-year-old Townsend man was traveling southbound on Saint Augustine Beach Road from the area of Port Penn. In the area of 1800 Saint Augustine Beach Road, the roadway curves gradually to the right. For unknown reasons, the operator failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway, traveled across the solid double yellow line, and the northbound lane of travel before traveling off the east edge of the road and the front center of the vehicle struck a tree located on the east side of the roadway.

The driver was not properly restrained and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Saint Augustine Beach Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
