Wilmington Man Struck And Killed By Moving Truck In Claymont Monday

Claymont- The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early this morning, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said The incident occurred on August 3, 2020, at approximately 1:43 a.m., when a 2008 Black Chevrolet Suburban was southbound on Interstate 95 south of Harvey Road. For unknown reasons, the operator/victim stopped in the right lane of travel, exited his vehicle, and stood outside the driver side door.

A 2015 U-Haul Moving Truck was also traveling Southbound I-95, just south of Harvey Road in the right lane. As the U-Haul truck approached the stopped vehicle in the right lane, the operator attempted to maneuver to the left lane to avoid the collision. At the same time, the front right of the U-Haul struck the driver’s side of the SUV including the victim who was standing in the right lane, said Hatchell.

The operator of the Suburban, a 39-year-old male from Wilmington, DE, was pronounced deceased at the collision scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

After the initial impact, the U-Haul truck continued out of control in the left lane before the vehicle overturned and came to rest across both southbound lanes. Southbound I-95 was closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
