Police: Two Children Charged In Attempted Carjacking Tuesday

Delaware State Police have arrested a 14-year-old juvenile male and a 16-year-old juvenile male both of Wilmington for robbery and related charges following an attempted carjacking that occurred Tuesday night, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on August 23, 2022, at approximately 6:37 p.m., in the parking lot of Wawa, located at 2621 Philadelphia Pike in Claymont, two juvenile males approached an 18-year-old male victim who parked his vehicle and was walking into the store when they asked for a ride.

The victim refused and then went into the store to make a purchase. As the victim exited the store, he was approached by the suspects a second time. The suspects then demanded the victim’s car keys and implied they had a weapon said Hatchell. The victim complied, gave the keys to the suspect, and ran into the store to report the incident to the security guard. Prior to the suspects driving the vehicle away, the security guard ran to confront them in the parking lot. The suspects exited the vehicle and fled the area on foot. With the assistance of New Castle County Police, the suspects were apprehended on Maple Lane behind the store.

The victim was not injured during the incident.
