Police: PA Man Found With AK-47 In Newark City Park

On September 23, 2020, at about 7:28 in the morning, Newark Police were called to the Phillips Park basketball courts, on B Street, for a report of a person pointing a firearm at other people, according to police.

Officials said arriving officers located the suspect that was described by the caller. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the suspect was in possession of three handguns in his backpack, however, no victim was located.

Officers searched the suspect’s backpack and located three loaded handguns, one of which was an AK-47 style pistol loaded with more than 25 rounds, according to police. Officers located more than 100 rounds of ammunition along with the handguns. Although the suspect was found to possess a license to carry a firearm in Pennsylvania, this license is not valid in Delaware.

The suspect was identified as Markee Johnson, 23, of Chester, Pennsylvania. Johnson was taken into custody without incident and transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with three counts of Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon. Johnson appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was released on his own recognizance.
