Motor Vehicle Accident With Ejection Closes Route 1 Saturday Night

Middletown – Just before 9:45 Saturday evening rescue crews from the Odessa, Townsend, and Delaware City Fire Companies along with New Castle County Paramedics and Trooper 4 were dispatched to Route 1 NB in the area of Hyetts Corner for reports of a motor vehicle accident with ejection.

On his arrival, Oddesa Fire Company Chief Rich Trincia Jr. reported that one patient had been ejected and possibly two others were injured.

Traffic quickly became gridlocked in the area of the accident making it difficult for emergency crews to access the scene. Command ordered the road closed which allowed crews to travel southbound in the northbound lanes.

As crews made their way to the accident scene Trooper 4 notified Command that they were one minute out. Trooper 4’s medic would be the first medic on scene.

Information regarding the number of patients and their injuries is not available at this time. We do know that the ejected patient was a pediatric patient. It’s believed that Trooper 4 transported that patient to AI DuPont.

Delaware State Police issued the following statement at around 10 PM “Traffic Advisory- Rt. 1 northbound at Longwood Grove Road is shut down due to a crash.”

Crews remained on scene for just over two hours, opening the road just before 11:45.
