Driver Killed After Exiting His Vehicle On I-95 In Newark

Newark- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred late last night, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on January 24, 2021, at approximately 11:42 p.m., a Nissan Titan was traveling northbound Interstate 95 at S. Chapel Street. For unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off the roadway and into the left shoulder where the left rear side of the vehicle struck a guardrail. The collision caused the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise, until stopping facing southbound in the northbound lane. The operator, a 53-year-old Bear man, exited his vehicle and attempted to cross all northbound lanes of I-95. At this time, a 2018 Hyundai Elantra was traveling northbound I-95 in the right lane. The front of the Elantra struck the pedestrian throwing him to the shoulder of the roadway.

The pedestrian was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His identification is pending notification to the next of kin.

The operator of the Elantra, a 44-year-old male of Princeton, NJ, was not injured.

Interstate 95 northbound was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was completed, and the roadway was cleared.
