Fourteen-Year-Old Girl Killed In Rollover Crash Near Dover Saturday

Dover – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash from earlier this morning, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Fournier said on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at approximately 8:39 a.m. a 2021 Kia Forte was traveling eastbound on Fast Landing Road (SR 42) just east of Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (SR 1) at an extreme high rate of speed approaching a moderate right curve. Due to its high-speed, the operator was unable to negotiate the curve and traveled off the north side of the roadway said Fournier.

After exiting the roadway, the Kia traveled down an embankment and into a grass field. The vehicle continued in a northeasterly direction where it started to rotate in a counterclockwise direction as it struck an evergreen tree with the right rear. After hitting the tree the car overturned violently striking several other evergreen trees as it continues in a northeasterly direction before coming to a stop.

As the Kia was overturning, the left rear passenger, a 13-year-old female from Dover was not properly restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where she was treated and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 7-year-old male from Dover was seated in the rear center seat and not properly restrained, but not ejected from the car. He was flown from the scene to A.I. duPont where he was treated and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 14-year-old Dover female was a right rear passenger and not properly restrained. She was not ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The operator, a 35-year-old male from Dover who was properly restrained, was flown to Christiana Medical Center where he was treated and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fast Landing Road between Meadow Green Ave and East Denneys Road was closed for approximately six hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
