Police: Newark Cop Almost Runover, Suspect Resist Arrest, Released On Unsecured Bond

Just after 3:35 on Saturday afternoon, two Newark Police Officers were conducting foot patrol on East Cleveland Avenue near Wilbur Street. The officers noticed a line of traffic traveling eastbound on East Cleveland Avenue.

Lt. Andrew Rubin said a blue sedan was driving in the oncoming lane and over a double yellow line to pass the line of traffic. One of the officers, in an attempt to stop the vehicle, stepped into the roadway. Rubin said the vehicle accelerated, however, the officer was able to avoid being struck by the vehicle. Officers noted the vehicle’s license plate number and alerted area police agencies.

A short time later, a Newport Police Officer observed the suspect vehicle pulling into the driveway of a Wilmington area residence. The Newport officer contacted the driver of the vehicle and took him into custody after a brief struggle said Rubin.

The suspect was identified as Kevin Jimenez, 24, of Wilmington.

Jimenez was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with:

Newport Police Department Charges:
Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Resisting Arrest

Newark Police Department Charges:
Reckless Endangering First Degree
Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal
Reckless Driving
Overtaking a Vehicle on the Left

Jimenez appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was later released on $8,200 unsecured bail.
