Escaped Sussex Corrections Center Inmate Captured By Off-Duty Officers

Felton – At 2:57 pm, Wednesday, June 16th, 2021, Felton Police Department responded to the 6300 block of Canterbury Road in Felton for a report of an escaped inmate.

Felton police learned the suspect was Brian Lamont Sadler Jr, 21, of Smyrna, Delaware. During the course of the investigation, police determined the accused was a Sussex Community Corrections Center Inmate who “walked away” from a work detail earlier in the day near Milford Harrington Highway.

An off-duty Milton Police Officer identified the escapee as he ran across the road in front of him in a fully marked Milton police cruiser. Sadler immediately fled trying to allude the police, officials said.

After a short pursuit, Sadler surrendered and an on-duty Felton officer was able to take him into custody without incident with the assistance of the off-duty Milton Officer. Units from the Harrington Police Department and Delaware State Police arrived on scene and stood by until the Sussex Escape Recovery Team arrived to take custody of Sadler.

He was charged by the Department of Corrections with Escape after Conviction (class D Felony) and remains in their custody.
