Police Identify Woman Killed In Kirkwood Highway Crossover Crash

Wilmington-Delaware State Police have identified the individual who died in the fatal motor vehicle crash on Friday, July 9, 2021, on Kirkwood Highway, as 22-year-old Jailene Vega of Wilmington.

Wilmington- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Friday morning on eastbound Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) at Milltown Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on July 09, 2021, at approximately 7:46 a.m., a Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound on Kirkwood Highway in the right lane from the intersection of Milltown Road. A Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Kirkwood Highway from the area of Woodmill Drive. For reasons unknown, its operator lost control, proceeded across the center concrete median and into the eastbound lanes of travel, according to Hatchell. The Fusion continued traveling out of control until the passenger side of the Fusion struck the front of the F-150.

The operator of the Fusion, a 22-year-old female of Wilmington, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The operator of F-150, a 60-year-old male of Wilmington and his front-seat passenger were both transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where they were admitted for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Both the operator and his passenger were wearing their seatbelts.

Eastbound Kirkwood Highway between Milltown Road and Woodmill Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway cleared.

Breaking Report

Just before 7:45, Friday morning rescue crews from the Mill Creek Fire Company were alerted to an accident on Kirkwood Highway at Woodmill Drive.

While en route to the crash, crews learned that one patient may be trapped. A short time later Good Samaritans on the scene reported to 911 call takers that one of the vehicles was on fire.

First to arrive on scene was a Mill Creek ambulance. While one of the EMTs grabbed their gear the other grabbed a large fire extinguisher and ran to the burning truck. Within seconds firefighters were also on scene and assisted in bringing the fire under control.

Images from the crash scene depict a very serious crash. At least two patients have been transported to the trauma center. The condition of a third patient has not been confirmed by authorities.

The eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway have been closed at Milltown Road. Expect the road to be closed for the next several hours.
