Troopers Release Details In Fatal Newark Crash

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Monday afternoon on Old Baltimore Pike at Dixie Line Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on August 30, 2021, at approximately 4:01 p.m., a white 2003 Jeep Liberty, was traveling westbound on Old Baltimore Pike towards the area of Dixie Line Road and the Maryland State Line. At this time, a red 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier, was traveling eastbound Old Baltimore Pike and had just entered into Delaware passing Dixie Line Road. The front center of the Chevrolet then struck the front left of the Jeep. A silver 2007 Kia Sportage that was traveling westbound directly behind the Jeep was unable to avoid the initial collision. Immediately after the initial impact, the Kia struck the driver side of the Jeep. All three vehicles came to a rest in the westbound lane of travel.

There were two occupants, a 28-year-old male and a 38-year-old female inside of the Chevrolet. Both occupants were not properly restrained. The 28-year-old male operator was transported to Christiana hospital for serious injuries. The 38-year-old female passenger was transported to Christiana hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Identification is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 63-year-old male operator of the Jeep and 44-year-old female operator of the Kia were transported to Christina Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Old Baltimore Pike was closed in both directions for approximately 4 hours while the crash was being investigated and the roadway cleared.
