Off-Duty Officer Shot At While Trying To Stop Burglary In Progress

On November 12, 2021 at approximately 0040 hours members of the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the area of Dasher Avenue in the community of Whethersfield in Bear for a report of subjects breaking into vehicles in the area.

As officers were responding, the 911 Center received another call reporting the incident, this time from an off-duty law enforcement officer. The officer reported as they pulled into the community, they observed several subjects attempting to break into vehicles. When the officer called out to the subjects, they entered an awaiting SUV and fled the area. As they were fleeing, someone inside the vehicle fired multiple shots in the direction of the officer and their vehicle. The officer was not injured, however, his vehicle was struck by gunfire.

The Criminal Investigations Unit has assumed this investigation and is currently seeking assistance from the public. While this investigation is ongoing, there is currently no suspect information. The vehicle involved is described as a Gray, newer model Sport Utility Vehicle. Detectives are asking anyone who may have video surveillance at their homes or nearby business to contact them.
