Police: Carjackers Pistol Whip Women, Assault Elderly Woman In Claymont

The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted carjacking that took place in a Wawa parking lot Saturday morning, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said the incident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m., Saturday, January 22, 2022, in the parking lot of Wawa, located at 2621 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont. The investigation determined two male suspects approached a 56-year-old female victim and a 72-year-old female victim on both sides of the vehicle while sitting inside of their car in the parking lot.

The suspects opened the vehicle doors and began demanding the victims to exit the car. The victims were slow to comply with the suspects’ demands causing one of the suspects to strike the 56-year-old victim in the back of the head with a handgun. During this time, the 72-year-old victim was physically assaulted by the other suspect. Both suspects then ran to a silver Mazda 3 in the parking lot and fled the scene. The 56-year-old victim was treated and released from an area hospital for injuries to the head.

The suspects were described as two black males, approximately 15-25 years old, wearing all dark clothing.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Dukes of the Troop 2 Criminal Investigative Unit by calling 302-365-8412.
