Investigators Say Body Found Inside Burning Vehicle Wednesday

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating this morning’s fire that heavily damaged an automobile in the parking lot of a Newark, Delaware apartment complex, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the Christiana Fire Company responded to the Rockwood Apartments in the 1600 block of Gregory Drive near the Pulaski Highway around 10:00 am for a 9-1-1 report of an automobile on fire. Firefighters extinguished a vehicle fire in the parking lot and discovered a person deceased inside the car.

State fire investigators responded to the scene and are currently searching for the origin and cause of this fire. The victim was transferred to the custody of the Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy and positive identification.

Fire damage was estimated at $10,000. There were no other injuries. There was no structure damage to the apartment buildings. The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
