Young Man Injured In Saturday Morning Train Crash Succumbs To His Injuries

On April 23, 2022, at about 2:15 a.m., Newark Police responded to the railroad tracks at the intersection of New London Road and West Main Street for a train collision involving an unoccupied vehicle and pedestrians.

The investigation has determined that a 2020 Toyota Camry drove the wrong way on New London Road, between West Cleveland Avenue and West Main Street, and turned westbound onto the railroad tracks, becoming disabled on the tracks.

The seven occupants inside the vehicle were able to exit the vehicle prior to the eastbound train striking the vehicle. The driver and another occupant were unable to get away from the rear of the vehicle before the front of the vehicle was struck by the train. As a result, both were struck by the vehicle and the train. Both victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries from the crash. No other passengers from the vehicle sustained injury.

Officials said the driver of the vehicle, Luigi Oronzio, 20, of Newark, succumbed to his injuries on April 27, 2022. The other injured occupant has since been released from the hospital after treatment.
