Police: Man Facing DUI, Assault Charges After Slamming Into County Officer

New Castle County Police are investigating a crash involving one of their officers.

Police said on Saturday at 3:20 p.m. officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the area of Polly Drummond Hill Shopping Center for a motor vehicle crash that occurred on Poly Drummond Hill Rd, involving a Patrol Officer.

The 16-year veteran officer was on duty traveling southbound on Polly Drummond Hill Road in his fully marked New Castle County Division of Police Tahoe. After the officer went through the intersection with Linden Hill Rd, he slowed and signaled a left turn. The officer was then rear-ended by a 2015 Dodge Durango driven by 27-year-old Edison Martinez-Torres.

The officer was transported to a local area hospital where he was treated and later released for his injuries. Martinez-Torres was not injured,.

Investigators from the New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit arrived at the scene and assumed the investigation. Officials said the investigators transported Martinez-Torres to police headquarters and charged him with DUI (Second Offense), Vehicular Assault 2nd, Reckless Driving and Driving While Suspended or Revoked.

He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and held in lieu of $2,200 secured bail.
