Police: Man Charged In Newark Robbery Released On His Own Recognizance

The Newark Police Department is investigating a robbery that is reported to have occurred in the area of 58 East Main Street on May 17, 2022 at approximately 11:00 P.M., according to Lt. Andrew Rubin.

Rubin said that the victim reported that they had left a local establishment and were walking in the municipal parking lot behind 58 East Main Street. The victim reported that they were approached by two male suspects while walking through the parking lot.

The victim and the suspects engaged in a brief conversation and both suspects then assaulted the victim, knocking the victim to the ground. The suspects then robbed the victim of the victim’s personal property and fled on foot from the scene said Rubin. The victim suffered minor injuries in the assault and robbery.

Newark Police detectives developed Christian Gates, 21, of Newark, as a suspect in this incident using video surveillance and evidence, according to Rubin. A warrant for Gates’ arrest was issued by Justice of the Peace Court #2 on June 2, 2022.

On June 3, 2022, Newark Police arrested Gates at his residence without incident. He was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Robbery Second Degree and Conspiracy Second Degree. Gates appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was released on his own recognizance.

There is still one suspect outstanding. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Sgt. J. Skinner at (302) 366-7100 x. 3135 or jskinner@newark.de.us.
