Woman Charged With Attempted Murder In Newark-Area Officer-Involved Shooting

New Castle Count Police Detectives have arrested a 30-year-old Philadelphia woman who was involved in a shooting that occurred on September 9, 2022, at Hunters Crossing Apartments in Newark, according to Corporal Michael McNasby.

McNasby said on Monday, September 12, 2022, Portia Herndon, was charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Portia was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and bail was set at $250,000.00 cash. She was committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution but remains in stable condition at Christiana Hospital in the custody of the Department of Corrections said McNasby.

The 26-year-old female victim remains in stable condition at Christiana Hospital.

Colonel Joseph Bloch, Chief of the New Castle County Division of Police said the following of Friday evening’s events, “I am deeply disturbed by the events that occurred on Friday night in the Hunters Crossing community. I am proud that our officer’s quick response and immediate action stopped the threat to other members of the community and likely prevented further tragedy. In addition, the aid rendered by our officers, paramedics, and fire department personnel contributed to the fact that both the victim and the suspect are alive today.”

New Castle County Police are investigating a shooting that involved two of their own.

On Friday, September 9, 2022, at approximately 8:30 pm officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the unit block of Fairway Road, Hunters Crossing Apartments, in Newark for a domestic-related incident. The initial caller advised the suspect was armed with a firearm.

Two uniformed patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police arrived on scene according to police. Officers encountered a female suspect, actively shooting a firearm. Both officers discharged their weapons. The female suspect was struck in the torso. She was transported to Christiana Hospital where she is currently listed in critical condition.

Upon checking the area, officers located a 26-year-old female victim near a vehicle. The preliminary investigation showed that the female suspect was engaged in a domestic dispute with this female. During that encounter, the female suspect shot the victim multiple times according to police. She was also transported to Christiana Hospital. She is currently listed in critical condition.

The New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit and the Delaware Department of Justice – Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust are currently investigating this shooting. Per Division policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is conducted officials said Saturday.
