Troopers Update Fatal New Castle Pedestrian Accident

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the New Castle area on Wednesday night.

Officials said on February 15, 2023, at approximately 11:46 p.m., a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling in the right lane of northbound New Castle Avenue (Route 9), just north of West Avenue. At the time, a 40-year-old New Castle man was walking northbound on the right shoulder of New Castle Avenue. As the vehicle neared the location of the pedestrian, he walked into the right northbound lane of travel and directly into the path of the Jeep according to police. The front of the Jeep struck the pedestrian.

The 40-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification of the next of kin. The pedestrian did not cross at a crosswalk, was wearing dark clothing, and was not carrying a light at the time of the collision police said Thursday.

New Castle Avenue between West Avenue and Hillview Drive was closed for approximately 3 hours while the collision scene was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

Breaking Report

Just after midnight, rescue crews responded to New Castle Avenue for reports of a pedestrian struck in the area of the Route 9 Library.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that the patient succumbed to their injuries.
