Voters Send Incumbents Packing After Smyrna’s 100% Property Tax Increase

Smyrna voters sent two incumbent town council members packing after last month’s property tax rate hike.

In Smyrna’s District 3, Alvin Pope topped incumbent Valerie Forbes, 259 votes to Forbes 54.

For the at-large council seat, Justin Capps won with 218 votes, defeating Dean Johnson, who received 208 votes, and incumbent Gerald Brown, who garnered 172 votes.

These elections came on the heels of a vote the City Council last month, which saw property taxes raised by 100%, from 47 cents to 94 cents per $100 of assessed value.
