The Delaware State Police are investigating the tragic death of a volunteer firefighter.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that the firefighter lost his life while responding to a crash on Lewes Georgetown Highway at the intersection of Asphalt Alley near Georgetown on Tuesday.

Officials identified the firefighter as 23-year-old Thomas Wilson Berry III. Berry, a member of both the Georgetown and Ellendale Fire Companies, stopped to assist a driver involved in the crash when he was killed.

The incident, which occurred just before 4:30 p.m., involved multiple downed power lines and a utility pole across the roadway. Officials have not released details on how Berry was killed.

The cause of death is pending a determination by the Medical Examiner.

Following the incident, Berry was transported to Medical Examiners office in Sussex County, accompanied by a solemn procession of first responders.

This is a developing story, and further details will be provided as they become available.
