Gunfire Near Charter School Leads To Arrest

A male juvenile was arrested following a shots fired incident near Freire Charter School on Wednesday at approximately 2:55 p.m.,

According to an official statement released by Freire, shots were fired outside the school building on East 15th Street. While no injuries were reported, law enforcement officers immediately secured the scene. In connection with the incident, Wilmington Police apprehended a 15-year-old male juvenile who was found fleeing the scene. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and was discovered to be in possession of a loaded .380 caliber handgun, which had been reported as stolen police said. The juvenile faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, receiving a stolen firearm, and discharging a firearm on a city street.

The juvenile was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and remanded to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center on $40,000 cash-only bail.

Freire Wilmington’s administration reassured families that no students or staff were harmed and praised the quick response of local law enforcement and school staff. All students were dismissed safely following confirmation from authorities that the situation had been resolved.
