Elkton House Fire Ruled Accidental

File

A residential fire in Elkton, Maryland, caused an estimated $20,000 in damage Saturday evening.

The fire was reported just after 8:40 at a split-level single-family home in the 100 block of North Tartan Drive. Friends of the occupants discovered the fire and immediately contacted 911.

Upon arrival, firefighters from the Singerly Volunteer Fire Company encountered active fire conditions in the area of the floor assembly. Investigators later determined that the blaze began in a room used to house reptiles and was caused accidentally by a heat lamp.

Roughly 25 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Smoke alarms inside the home activated during the incident. However, there were no sprinkler systems present.
