Before The Coast Guard, “Storm Warriors” In Delaware

The Milford Museum will present a lecture titled Storm Warriors: The U.S. Life-Saving Service in Delaware on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Milford Public Library, located at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford.

The program will explore the history of the United States Life-Saving Service and its operations along Delaware’s coast. Before the formation of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Life-Saving Service was responsible for responding to shipwrecks and maritime emergencies. In Delaware, six life-saving stations were established to protect vessels traveling along the state’s shoreline. These stations were staffed by trained crews who conducted rescue missions in dangerous conditions.

The presentation will highlight how the Service was organized and operated, as well as recount specific stories of shipwrecks and rescues that occurred off Delaware’s coast. Attendees will gain insight into the equipment, training, and daily responsibilities of the surfmen who served during a time when maritime travel was perilous and rescue depended on the bravery of these crews.

This event is part of the Milford Museum’s ongoing American History Series, which features monthly lectures on historical subjects of local, regional, and national interest. Admission is free and open to the public.
