A 46-year-old New Castle man has been arrested following a fatal crash in Bear on Sunday morning. Delaware State Police said Omar Mendoza is facing vehicular homicide and several traffic-related charges after a collision on Route 40 near Fir Avenue left one person dead.
At approximately 10:00 a.m., a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Mendoza entered the crossover for Fir Avenue, failed to stop at the stop sign, and crossed into the westbound lanes in the wrong direction. A Suzuki motorcycle traveling westbound collided with the Malibu, ejecting both riders.
The passenger of the motorcycle44-year-old Rasheeva Moore, of New Castle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle operator, a 36-year-old man from Bear, and Mendoza were both taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The roadway was closed for about three and a half hours while investigators from the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the scene.
Mendoza was later released from the hospital, charged, and arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11. He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $10,250 cash bond. Charges include Vehicular Homicide Second Degree, Driving Without a Valid License, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, and Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device.
The investigation remains ongoing.
