Fatal Accident Closes Route 13 In Greenwood

At approximately 4:35 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Sussex Highway (U.S. Route 13) and Beach Highway (Delaware Route 16) in Greenwood. Responding units from the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company arrived to find a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle with confirmed entrapment.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that one person succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Fire and rescue personnel worked to secure the vehicles and assist law enforcement in closing the roadway while investigators began their examination of the crash site.

The Delaware State Police issued a statement confirming the roadway closure, saying, “Northbound lanes of Sussex Highway at Beach Highway are closed due to a serious crash. Please seek alternate routes of travel to avoid delays.”

Traffic in the area was diverted as troopers and accident reconstruction specialists documented the scene and cleared debris from the roadway. The identity of the deceased and the cause of the collision have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin and completion of the investigation.

As of 7:45 Monday morning crews remained on scene working to clear the accident.
