A tragic accident at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark on Thursday has claimed the life of a school bus driver, according to the Christina School District.
Authorities said emergency crews were dispatched to the school, located at 50 Gender Road, for a report of a person trapped between two buses. Responding agencies included Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company Station , New Castle County Paramedics and Delaware State Police.
District officials later confirmed that the collision occurred during a routine bus evacuation drill when one bus accidentally struck another, trapping a staff member between the vehicles. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the victim, identified bus driver 54-year-old Wanda Montalvo, as pronounced deceased after being transported to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.
“It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt compassion that we share the news of a tragic accident that took place this morning at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School involving two of our buses,” the Christina School District said in a statement. “During a routine evacuation drill, one bus unfortunately collided with another, resulting in a staff member being caught between the vehicles. Despite all efforts, we are profoundly saddened to inform you that the bus driver involved has passed away from their injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.”
The district added that counseling and support services are available to employees through the State of Delaware Employee Assistance Program (EAP) by calling 855-556-2065 for 24/7 access to a Care Manager.
Emergency operations at the scene lasted approximately 30 minutes as responders secured the area and assisted those involved. The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
