The Dover Police Department announced the arrest of a 15-year-old Clayton resident on multiple firearm-related charges after an investigation that began Tuesday evening. The case was initiated when a Capital School District staff member reported being told that the student had brought a firearm onto the Dover High School campus the previous day.
According to police, High School staff and the School Resource Officer opened an investigation as soon as the information was received. When the student arrived at school Wednesday morning, he was taken into custody without incident. Police said he did not have a firearm on him at the time, but they stated that substantial evidence supported the accuracy of the initial report. Authorities did not disclose what that evidence was. Detectives from the department’s Drugs, Vice and Organized Crime Unit later recovered two handguns allegedly associated with the incident from the teen’s residence, according to police.
The student was committed to the Stevenson House Youth Detention Facility on $36,001 secured bail. He faces charges that include possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a deadly weapon in a safe school zone, possession of a large-capacity magazine and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Capital School District Superintendent Dr. Victoir Cahoon issued a statement highlighting the district’s ongoing partnership with Dover Police and the importance of School Resource Officers in maintaining safety. Police Chief Johnson added that the situation illustrates the value of reporting concerns promptly, noting that the timely alert helped prevent a potentially dangerous outcome.
