Fire Officials Investigating Fatal Fire In Leipsic

A residential fire in Leipsic on Wednesday resulted in the death of one occupant and left the structure heavily damaged. The blaze was reported just before 7:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Denney Street, where emergency crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the first floor of an outbuilding that had been converted into a living space.

Responding crews from Leipsic and surrounding departments began fire suppression and search efforts after reports indicated that a person was still inside the structure. Firefighters entered the building, but advancing conditions and a partial collapse forced them to withdraw. After the area was stabilized and searches resumed, one individual was located deceased inside the structure.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office, Delaware State Police, and the Division of Forensic Science are conducting the investigation. Damage has been estimated at $30,000.

Officials reported that specialized resources were required to secure the collapsed area for search and investigative work. The Kent County Building Inspector later condemned the structure, and it is set to be demolished due to extensive fire damage.

Fire crews on scene included units and personnel from Leipsic, Little Creek, Cheswold, Dover, Smyrna, Clayton, and Magnolia, along with support from Kent County public safety agencies, the Delaware State Police, and the Delaware State Fire School. No additional injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
