Police: Man Charged In Armed Carjacking

According to the Wilmington Police Department, a Wilmington man has been arrested in connection with an carjacking incident that ended following a vehicle pursuit and crash.

Wilmington Police said the incident occurred on December 28 at approximately 9:40 p.m., when members of the department’s Uniformed Services Division were in the area of Lancaster Avenue and North DuPont Street and observed a vehicle that police allege had been taken during an armed carjacking that had just occurred. Police reported that officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled the area.

Police stated that a short time later the vehicle was located in the 1900 block of Delaware Avenue, where it collided with a residence. According to Wilmington Police, officers made contact with the sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as 31-year-old Devante Burton, who was taken into custody without further incident.

Wilmington Police reported that officers recovered a revolver-style pellet gun from the scene.

Burton has been charged with robbery in the first degree, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief under $1,000, in addition to traffic-related offenses. Police said Burton was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $205,000 cash-only bail.
