Two Injured After Flying Off Overpass Thursday Night

Police are investigating a serious traffic accident Thursday evening in the Middletown area, that sent two to the hospital.

The incident was dispatched to the area of Route 1 South and Route 301 South at approximately 9:20 p.m. Initial reports indicate a vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 301 when it left the roadway, went off an overpass, and fell a significant distance to the ground below.

Emergency crews from New Castle County Paramedics, the Odessa Fire Company, and the Port Penn Fire Company responded to the scene. Air medical resources were also requested, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit responded to assist with patient transport.

According to initial reports, one patient, a 38-year-old woman, was injured after the vehicle left the bridge. The vehicle reportedly fell off the overpass and came to rest on the grass below. It was also reported to have rolled and traveled approximately 100 yards at some point during the crash.

The woman was treated at the scene and prepared for air transport. Delaware State Police Trooper 4 transported the patient to a trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

A second patient, identified as a 15-year-old female, was also involved in the crash and was transported from the scene by a Port Penn ambulance for medical evaluation. No additional details regarding her condition have been released.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
