Police have identified a suspect following a stabbing involving a rideshare driver that occurred shortly after midnight Saturday in Newark.
According to the Newark Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:01 a.m. on March 14, 2026, for a reported stabbing in a business parking lot in the 100 block of Grove Lane. The investigation determined the victim was working as a rideshare driver and had picked up a passenger who listed Grove Lane as the destination.
Police said that at the end of the ride, the suspect, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver, retrieved a knife and began stabbing the driver in the neck and the back of the head without warning. The suspect then ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and continued attempting to stab him. The victim fought back, and the suspect fled the area on foot.
Authorities said the driver sustained stab wounds to the neck, shoulder, back, and hand. After the suspect fled, the victim drove away from the area and contacted police, who responded to his location. He was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted and is being treated in stable condition.
Emergency crews were initially dispatched to the area of Grotto’s Pizza on Main Street at approximately 12:04 a.m., according to information from the scene. Police did not specify the location where the driver had traveled after leaving the scene of the attack.
Newark Police detectives assumed the investigation and used multiple investigative techniques to identify a suspect. Members of the Newark Police Department SWAT Team and Criminal Investigations Division later served warrants at a residence within the city limits.
A 17-year-old male was taken into custody without incident and transported to Newark Police Department headquarters. Police obtained an arrest warrant charging the suspect with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Robbery in the First Degree, and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony.
The suspect is awaiting arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 11. The investigation remains ongoing.
