The Newark Police Department reported that officers conducted a targeted traffic enforcement detail Tuesday at the intersection of South Main Street and West Main Street, resulting in dozens of citations issued over a short period.
According to information released, members of the department’s Traffic Response Unit carried out the operation on April 14 in response to ongoing safety concerns at the intersection. Crash data has shown distracted driving remains a contributing factor in a significant number of collisions in the area, and officials have also received repeated complaints about motorists failing to yield the right-of-way.
The enforcement detail lasted approximately two and a half hours. During that time, officers issued a total of 46 citations for violations that included using a cell phone while driving, failure to yield, not wearing a seatbelt, and improper window tint.
Police indicated that similar proactive enforcement efforts will continue as part of ongoing efforts to address hazardous driving behavior and reduce crashes linked to inattentive driving.
