New Castle County Police arrested a 17-year-old Tuesday evening after detectives in the Edgemoor Gardens community.
At approximately 8:24 p.m. on August 11, detectives assigned to the Active Crime Trends Team were conducting proactive patrols when they observed the juvenile committing a pedestrian violation. Officials said Detectives stopped him on Salisbury Drive and developed probable cause during the investigation that led to a search of a backpack he was carrying.
Police said detectives recovered approximately 80 grams of marijuana and a loaded 9mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Investigators determined the juvenile was prohibited from possessing or carrying a firearm due to previous felony convictions according to police.
The juvenile was taken to New Castle County Police Headquarters and charged with two felony counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and felony counts of possession of a firearm by a person under 21, possession of a large-capacity magazine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.
He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana other than a personal-use quantity and possession of drug paraphernalia, along with roadway violations and a civil violation related to possession of a large-capacity magazine.
The 17-year-old was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to a juvenile detention center after failing to post $86,002 cash bail.
