K-9 Officers Investigation Leads To Drug/Gun Arrest, Man Held On $210,600 Bail

Wilmington – The New Castle County Police have arrested 20-year-old Giovanni Matos after he left a gun and drugs on a bench in Canby Park, according to M/Cpl. Heather Carter.

Carter said on Wednesday (June 7) at about 12:00 p.m., County Police K-9 officers observed a subject later identified to be Giovanni Matos, acting suspicious in the area of Canby Park. Giovanni Matos was observed leaving a book bag on a park bench and walked away after he observed the police, said carter. When the officers conducted a probable cause search of the book bag , they located a handgun, ammunition and 39 bags of heroin, according to Carter.

Giovanni Matos was taken into custody without incident at the intersection of Clayton Road and Robbins Place.

Giovanni Matos was charged with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited from a previous felony conviction, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited from a previous drug conviction within 10 years, possession of a firearm and controlled substance at the same time, carrying a concealed deadly firearm, and possession of heroin. Giovanni Matos was arraigned and committed to Howard Young after failing to post a $210,600.00 cash only bail.
