Newport – As Delaware State Police were working three separate accidents, involving nine vehicles, at I-95 NB and the Airport Road exit, a tractor trailer crashed sending people scrambling to get out of the way.

As Troopers were investigating the accidents a tractor trailer, trying to avoid hitting a car, swerved and hit the guard rail just feet from where Troopers and accident victims were exchanging information.

The tractor trailer accident sent two additional vehicles into the Jersey Barrier on the opposite side of the road, before the truck smashed into the guardrail and ripped open it’s fuel tanks. Two people on that side of the road reported minor injuries. No Troopers were injured.

The original accidents involved two passenger vans carrying several occupants and seven other vehicles.

HAZMAT crews responded to the scene to deal with the fuel spill. I-95 NB was shut down while crews worked to open two of the five northbound lanes.

The roadway fully reopened just before 12:30, approximately two hours after the original accidents occurred.

Update: Two lanes reopened.

Another accident on I-95 NB near the service center has injured several people. Six ambulances have been requested in total for both scenes.
