Newark Cop Turned Repairman Saves The Frigid Day

Officers responding to a call for service yesterday went above and beyond to help a family in need.

On Wednesday, January 16, 2019, Newark Police, on the D Platoon, responded to a home on Madison Drive after the residents called to tell them that their furnace was not functioning properly.

Rather than directing the residents to a repairman, responding officers decided to inspect the furnace. As they were taking a look they learned that the family had recently run out oil.

Sgt. Michael Szep, who is familiar with oil-burning furnaces, knew that the oil line probably needed to be primed before the furnace could be restarted. Sure enough, after he bled the oil line and gave it a go it started right up.

With temperatures in the twenties and thirties most of the day, the officers surely saved the day for those Madison Drive residents.
