Early voting for Delaware’s 2024 General Election kicked off today with an unexpected surge in turnout across the state. The early start has already seen long lines, with some voters waiting up to two hours cast their vote.
Cathleen Hartsky-Carter, spokeswoman for the Delaware Department of Elections, reported over 14,500 voters had voted as of 3 PM. Some voters mentioned they had never seen lines this long for early voting in Delaware, with one voter noting that all the election workers she spoke with were surprised by the large turnout, telling the woman they hadn’t expected this level of participation on the very first day.
Turnout by county as of 3 PM is as follows:
- New Castle County: 3,129 voters
- Kent County: 2,508 voters
- Sussex County: 8,865 voters
- Total: 14,502 voters
Voters can cast their ballots early through November 3, with polling sites open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until October 29, and extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting October 30.
