Arson Investigation Underway In Shuttered Hospital Fire

New Castle, DE — The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an arson investigation following a fire that broke out at the site of the former Emily Bissell Hospital on Friday, June 20, 2025.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the Millcreek Fire Company was dispatched to the 3000 block of Newport Gap Pike for a reported building fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered active flames and smoke coming from the second and third floors of an abandoned building on the property. Due to the scale of the fire, additional mutual aid companies were requested to assist.

Deputies from the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and determined that the fire had been deliberately set officials said Monday. Investigators concluded that unknown individuals had unlawfully entered the building and ignited combustibles, resulting in extensive fire damage.

One firefighter suffered a medical emergency during the incident and was transported to ChristianaCare Emergency for treatment. The firefighter’s condition has not been disclosed. No other injuries were reported.

The fire caused approximately $15,000 in damage to the structure.
